light rant on gay representation

Posted by lemonboi13 - March 9th, 2024

i wish we had more good representation… (well WE are doing ok but like) i don’t like it when ppl write a gay character and make being gay their whole personality and everything they do is affected by it. I don’t even care if the gay character is a good person or not (in terms of the representation aspect) but i really want it to just… NOT MATTER, is all.

It depends... Speaking percentage-wise there's indeed not as much representation as there is in the actual population of any given country, but a few good examples come to mind.
Maybe you haven't seen some of them, so I'll write something up real quick:
* I'd say that 'She-Ra and the Princesses of Power' did a pretty good job, although not as many characters actually stated it 'as text'.
* 'Go Get a Roomie!' ( gogetaroomie.com ) was very good in that regard.
* 'Yurikuma Arashi' "The time for judgement is at hand. Rowr! Rowr!" :3
* The chief in 'Sasaki and Peeps' is gay and there 'is' more to his character, but he plays an overall small role in the story - still I like his "I'm gay, what of it?"-attitude.
* 'Cherry Magic! Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard?!' is 'all about' that good homosexual love.
* 'Asteroid in Love': They all are... _so_ gay! ;D
* 'Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear': Another unfortunate case where the characters are not allowed to say it outright, but those girls are absolutely a couple.
* 'Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer': I would say the two 'girl friends' (Yukimachi Tsukishiro & Subaru Hoshikawa) are a little more than 'just' friends, but both do not know that this is so during the main story.
* The protagonist in 'I'm in Love with the Villainess' is a lesbian - but I haven't had time to look into that show so far.

Trans representation is pretty abysmal, though. All good examples I can think of right now are:
* 'Wandering Son': It's the _core_story_.
* 'Blue Period': Ryuji ''Yuka'' Ayukawa. [Almost] right off the bat with next to no 'ambiguity'.
* 'So I'm a Spider, So What?': From the way they described it in the story, [Spoilers] was a transsexual boy. Although they never say it out loud they are pretty transparent about it. Nevertheless, the meat of the story is in the 'Spider Arc' - the 'Human Arc' merely exists so the series isn't almost exclusively inner monologue.
* 'Zombie Land Saga' was fun and 'had' a trans girl, but blink and you'll miss the mention... :/
